Washington Business Journal Covers Rockville Mayoral Visit 20 Feb '09

Talk about your high-powered test drives. Andrew Saul, son of banking and real estate mogul B.F. Saul II, is unveiling his company’s first electric car this month. The lucky driver? Rockville Mayor Susan Hoffmann.

The mayor will take the G1 for a spin Feb. 23. The car is the first product from Rockville-based Genovation Inc., which Saul founded in 2007.

Saul says he’s looking for small-fleet orders from state and local governments and companies. He’s also looking for qualified investors so he can begin production within the next six months.

The G1 is really a Ford Focus whose engine and fuel tank have been replaced with an electric motor, battery string, controller and other off-the-shelf parts.

The car, which operates for less than 5 cents per mile, will cost $22,000 if you already own a Focus. The cost goes up to $28,000 if Genovation has to buy a car first.
